Born
in the United States and raised in the Dominican Republic, I started
my dancing career at age thirteen. My first dancing steps were
in Classical Ballet at the Ballet Academy of Jeannette Lantigua.
I performed with the academy several times at its year-end recitals
at renowned theaters in the Dominican Republic.
After
studying Ballet for about six years, and shortly after moving back
to New York, I began taking classes in Belly dance. I found pleasure
in Middle Eastern dance
and enjoyed studying this form of art since the summer of 1994.
I started at Serena’s studios where I learned the basics. At Serena's
I attended classes with Patrima, Azza, and Serena herself. I left
Serena's Studios shortly after mastering the begginer levels to
study with Yousry Sharif with whom I have trained for many years,
and with whom I have learned to love Egyptian Style of Middle Eastern
dancing.
Other
Belly dance training includes classes and workshops with well-known
artists such as Jehan Kamal, Nouhran Sharif, Elena Lentini, Shoshana,
Anajid Sofian, Raqia Hassan, Mr. Mahmoud Reda, Jamila Al Wahid,
Momo Kadus, Dr. Mo Geddawi, Aziza and others.
Under
the direction of several instructors, professional dancers, and
my own search for venues, I have performed at several locations
and with several dance troupes. I have performed at the Ibis Club,
Columbia University, Theatre East, the 9th Avenue Street
Festival, Al Baraka Restaurant, Rakkasah Festival and Lincoln Center
to name a few.
Currently
I can be seen dancing with BellyTrance, a newly formed dance company
in New York.
When
not dancing, I hold a position as a Technical Designer with one
of the leading manufactures of men’s apparel. In the future, I
plan to look into other kinds of dance in an effort to build and
polish my technique and style. |
